How are YOU doing on our 2013-14 BHS READS Challenge?
It is going to be a chilly week here, with projected windchills at close to -45 degrees next Monday and Tuesday. That's perfect weather for cuddling up under a warm blanket with a good book!
Here are some of the newest additions to the BHS LMC Collection:
Experiment: A child is deliberately infected with the deadly small pox disease without his parents' informed consent. Result: The world's first vaccine. Experiment: A slave woman is forced to undergo more than thirty operations without anesthesia. Result: The beginnings of modern gynecology. Incidents like these paved the way for crucial, lifesaving medical discoveries. But they also harmed and humiliated their test subjects, many of whom did not agree to the experiments in the first place. How do doctors balance the need to test new medicines and procedures with their ethical duty to protect the rights of human subjects? Take a harrowing journey through some of history's greatest medical advances-and its most horrifying medical atrocities-to discover how human suffering has gone hand in hand with medical advancement.
Gareth Hinds's stylish graphic adaptation of the Bard's romantic tragedy offers modern touches -- including a diverse cast that underscores the story's universality. She's a Capulet. He's a Montague. But when Romeo and Juliet first meet, they don't know they're from rival families -- and when they find out, they don't care. Their love is honest and raw and all-consuming. But it's also dangerous. How much will they have to sacrifice before they can be together? In a masterful adaptation faithful to Shakespeare's original text, Gareth Hinds transports readers to the sun-washed streets and market squares of Shakespeare's Verona, vividly bringing the classic play to life on the printed page.
Fiction:
Otto and Leni thought they were safe: They escaped -- barely -- from war-torn Europe and are living as refugees in England. But now the Crown has recruited them: Great Britain wants them to go back. As spies! Dropped behind enemy lines, they embark on a top-secret operation. Code name: Wolfsangel. Their mission? Capture the one person who can defeat the ultimate evil of Nazism! Der Fuhrer has destroyed Otto's and Leni's families, but what ifthe tables were turned? What if Hitler's ultimate legacy was in their hands? Breathless pacing, nonstop action: By the screenwriter of Goldeneye , Hitler's Secret is a cinematic tale of revenge with an unexpected twist. A note by the author explains the truth behind the fiction and lets readers know what really became of history's greatest villains.

Love can be a real monster. Sixteen-year-old Boy's never left home. When you're the son of Frankenstein's monster and the Bride, it's tough to go out in public, unless you want to draw the attention of a torch-wielding mob. And since Boy and his family live in a secret enclave of monsters hidden under Times Square, it's important they maintain a low profile. Boy's only interactions with the world are through the Internet, where he's a hacker extraordinaire who can hide his hulking body and stitched-together face behind a layer of code. When conflict erupts at home, Boy runs away and embarks on a cross-country road trip with the granddaughters of Jekyll and Hyde, who introduce him to malls and diners, love and heartbreak. But no matter how far Boy runs, he can't escape his demons both literal and figurative until he faces his family once more. This hilarious, romantic, and wildly imaginative tale redefines what it means to be a monster and a man.
Levi was simple, like a child. It was the best thing about him, and it was the worst, too." When high school senior Jonas moves to Seattle, he is glad to meet Levi, a nice, soft-spoken guy and fellow basketball player. Suspense builds like a slow drumbeat as readers start to smell a rat in Ryan Hartwell, a charismatic basketball coach and sexual predator. When Levi reluctantly tells Jonas that Hartwell abused him, Jonas has to decide whether he should risk his future career to report the coach. Pitch-perfect basketball plays, well-developed characters, and fine storytelling make this heartbreaking psychological sports novel a slam dunk.
When Hunter Jackson and his half sister, Ashlin, return to their dad's for the first winter in years, they expect everything to be just like as when they were kids, but secrets are quickly spiraling out of control and someone turns up with a bullet to the head, and now they have to prove that the childhood friend they both love didn't do it.
